Types of Scanners
Different types of scanner are used for different applications. The capability and cost of scanners differ from type. Scanners required for industrial purpose are different from the ones meant for home use or in small office. Scanners are of three types They are:- Flatbed scanner
- Sheetfed scanner
- Handheld scanner.
Flatbed Scanner
A Flatbed Scanner is also known as desktop scanner and it works just like a photocopier. It allows the user to place a full piece of paper, book, magazine, photo or any other object onto the glass surface of the scanner. It then scans that object and convert it into digital form.
Sheetfed Scanner
A Sheetfed Scanner, also known as rollerfed scanner, works like a fax machine. The image is passed over a roller where it is captured. These Scanner are very versatile in scanning loose sheets of paper.
Short form :
Sheetfed scanner is less expensive when compared to the Flatbed scanner. The latter can scan and store images from books without having to remove the page, which is not possible in the case of the rollerfed scanner.
Handheld Scanner
A Handheld. or portable scanner is an optical scanner which is designed to be moved by hand across the object or document being scanned. Today, a hand scanner is extensively used with a PC or a word processor as an image input device. It is used for optically reading image or data from a document. This kind of scanner is operated by hand.Short form :
Handheld scanners are used for a number of application, such as for barcode reader at point-of-sale of product or services, for recording data from documents for later reproduction or processing, and for translating documents.
Handheld Scanners can be classified into:
- General purpose
- Special purpose
Most handheld scanners are directed to general purpose uses, so that they can read and store information designed for various application. The other category of handheld scanners is directed to the scanning of very specific types of images to provide a particular form of information. The best known type of scanner in this category is a bar code scanner, which is used to obtain the identification of a product with a bar code.
