Printer are the most popular output device. They provide information in a permanent readable form.They produce printed output of results, programs and data. A character printer prints one character of the text at a time. They are low-speed printer, with there speed ranging from 300-600 characters per second. Character printers can be classified as:
- Impact printer
- Non-Impact printer
Non-impact printers do not use any electro-mechanical printing head to strike against ribbon and paper. They use thermal, chemical, electrostatic, laser beam or inkjet technology for printing the text. Usually a non-impact type printer is faster than an impact type. The disadvantage of non-impact type printers is that they produce only single copy of the text whereas impact printers can produce multiple copies of the text. Two types of non impact printers character printers are available : Inkjet character printers and Laser printer.
