Random Access Memory (RAM)

Random Access Memory (RAM)

RAM is a read/write memory . Information can be written into and read from a RAM. It is a volatile memory which means, which means that it retains the stored information as long as the computer is connected to a power supply source. When power supply is switched off or interrupted, the stored information in the RAM is lost. RAMs are available in various capacities, for example: 256 MB 512 MB and so on.

There are two types of RAM

  • Static RAM
  • Dynamic RAM
There are two basic types of ram : static ram and  dynamic ram. Static ram can retain stored information as long as the power supply is on. But a dynamic ram loses its stored information in a very short time even when the power supply is on . Therefore, dynamic ram have to be refreshed periodically every 2 milliseconds. dynamic rams are cheaper and have high packing density with moderate speed. They also consume less power and are used where a large capacity of memory is needed. Static Rams are costlier and consume more power. They do not need refreshing circuity and have higher speed dynamic RAMs.
